Exciting Business Opportunity - Kiwi Corner Restaurant | 03 Mar 2011 |
| To all downunder lovers... After not far off 7 years of operation, the owners of the Kiwicorner Restaurant have decided to concentrate on their core activity and find someone to take their baby off their hands, so the restaurant is up for sale or gérance. It is hoped this will go into Aussie or Kiwi hands and thus remain the unique downunder restaurant in the capital though there are outsiders looking at changing it. It has a great potential for an owner/operator so if there is anyone interested in taking over our baby, get in touch fairly rapidly with Mark on moremland@yahoo.com |

Frederic Calinaud tackles the question: French Employment law - What are you so afraid of? | 26 Oct 2012 |
At ABIEs breakfast meeting of 26th October, Frederic Calinaud, Calinaud Avocats, spoke of the complex and often frightening issue of French employment law. As a specialist in French labour and employment law, Frederic assists both French and foreign companies with their employment issues. In his presentation he tackled some of the realities of French employment law; the complex and varied nature; the lack of flexibility; the premise of equal work = equal pay and the perception that the law is always in favour of the employee.
Frederic explained that French employment law changes all the time and is inevitably linked to politics and economics. The current high unemployment rate may encourage the government to be more flexible with employers in order to get results. He said he is seeing some increased flexibility in judges as a result of the economic crisis and need to create jobs.
As a conclusion, Frederic said that there are opportunities in France and his recommendation would be for companies to focus on their business whilst investing in specialist advice which might well save them money in the long run.

ABIE members' private tour of 'Luminous' | 29 Nov 2012 |
On Friday 16 November Helen Read, curator of the Australian Embassys current temporary exhibition, Luminous Desert Masterpieces from the Helen Read Collection provided a private guided tour of the exhibition to ABIE members.
Helen worked and lived in Walungurru (Kintore) and Kiwirrkurra in the central western deserts with many of the artists currently showing in 'Tjukurrtjanu,' at Musee' du Quai Branly in Paris. She described how she trained as a midwife and as a pilot in order to better support the Indigenous peoples of Australia, and how her experiences during this time led her to devote the next 26 years working with and for these peoples. Her collection of artwork was initially intended as a diary of her meetings with artists and now represents many different styles of painting.
During the tour, Helen explained how a language group's location may influence the artists choice of material, such as bark or ochre, and that the symbolism of these works is not meant to be exposed to the un-initiated. Artists often refer to the 'outside' story which they provide for the general public while the painting retains an 'inside' story accessible only to those with the appropriate level of knowledge.
Each artwork gives a fleeting glimpse of a different culture illustrating how little we know of the world that surrounds us.
The very interesting talk was followed by a networking lunch, which allowed ABIE members the opportunity to ask Helen further questions about the artists works. (Claire Bourke)
