Commonwealth Bank's centenary year

For 100 years Commonwealth Bank has played an integral role in the lives of Australians and growth of the Australian nation. That’s 100 years of helping customers through thick and thin, 100 years of making dreams a reality, helping businesses, along with supporting the infrastructure and growth of Australian cities.

It began as the government-owned Commonwealth Bank of Australia and has evolved to become a leading publicly listed company with a strong domestic and international presence. 15 July 2012 marks the centenary of the first branch opening in Collins Street Melbourne. In the year that followed, a further 1,880 branches and agencies in post offices were opened across the country; an extraordinary achievement in a country without planes, cars or trains. The London office was opened for general banking business on 20 January 1913 in leased premises at Egypt House (later named Bilbao House) 36-38 New Broad Street. The purpose of the London Office was to facilitate the handling of the Bank’s affairs in England and provide safe transit for the funds of emigrants from the U.K. to Australia.

Tidworth Branch opened during WWI

With the increase in business caused by the Australian military presence in wartime London, the building adjoining Egypt House at 39-41 New Broad Street ‘Friars House’ was leased from November 1915. The Strand branch opened on the ground floor of Australia House on 1 October 1917. During the War other branches were opened in the UK at Tidworth, Warminster, Weymouth and Hurdcott, places where there were large concentrations of Australian troops.

Today sees CBA Europe actively participating in banking activities across the UK and Continental Europe.
