 back to previous pageABIE welcomes the new Australian Ambassador to FrancePrior to his appointment as Ambassador to France, Mr Wells was Deputy Secretary to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as Australia's Ambassador to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation group.
From 2005 until 2009 he spearheaded Australia's China Free Trade Agreement task force concurrently with both Japan and Korea's Free Trade organisations.
Mr Wells' welcome speech underlined the importance of a vital business exchange between France and Australia, and he expanded on the details of the recent bi-lateral strategic parnership signed in Paris between France's Foreign Minister
M. Alain Juppé and Australia's former Foreign Minister Mr Kevin Rudd.
He said that both countries were seeking stronger cooperation in education, science, technology and culture. This cooperation would also include important collaboration on both climate change and renewable energy.
« These elements are the themes which underpin business in both our countries - business on a global stage », said Mr Wells.
« French and Australian businesses also recognise the need to work towards sustainable growth and increased innovation. All of this in a context of economic uncertainty in Europe and Asia's ascendency. »
He praised ABIE's contribution towards facilitating this exchange, noting that many of the association's Corporate Club members were key players in maintaining France as one of Australia's largest trading partners.
