  • Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook 2011‑12 by Hon Wayne Swan, MP, Deputy Prime Minister

    Global economic and financial conditions have deteriorated markedly in recent months, and the risks to global stability from the European sovereign debt crisis have intensified. Despite that the 2011‑12 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) released last week forecasts solid economic growth, low debt and a return to surplus in 2012‑13.

  • Australian Economic Update November 2011

    CBA Chief Economist, Michael Blythe provided ABIE members with the latest economic update on November 8th at the Australian Embassy. Entitled 'Australia and Europe: Manning the Barricades', Mr Blythe highlighted Australia's position as the global economy enters into ' a dangerous new phase' (IMF). The Australian economic story has been an easy one to sell in the past few years post Lehman's when the country dodged the global recession bullet.
    Financial concerns in the North American economy are lifting again and the debate about Australia's economic resilience has resurfaced.

  • The 13th Rencontres Internationales du Cinema des Antipodes’

    The 13th Rencontres Internationales du Cinema des Antipodes’- a festival dedicated to Australian and New Zealand films - opened in Saint Tropez on October 10 to packed houses and a brilliant Indian summer sky. Eighteen films and 5 documentaries, chosen by Festival Director and ABIE board member Bernard Bories, ranged from the beautiful and the brave to the slightly bizarre. Jean-Pierre Tuveri, the Mayor of Saint Tropez said 'Since it began in 1999, a permanent feature has been the Festival's capacity to surprise and captivate us. Our attention and interest has never diminished'.’

    Paul Tracey of Fine Wine World and Mike Cheika, Head Coach of the Stade Francais, brought together the worlds of rugby and fine wine at the ABIE RWC Wine Tasting event last Thursday.
    ABIE members and supporters from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise enjoyed Mike Cheika's interesting and humorous insights into the world of rugby whilst appreciating the wines from those great rugby nations of Australia, New Zealand, France, Agentina, Italy and South Africa.

  • Current unrest in the Arab World - the domino effect and its potential economic impact

    BNP Paribas economist Pascal Devaux gave a detailed presentation on the economic situation in the Middle East which has resulted in the recent demonstrations, civil resistance and demands for political change in Arab countries. In examining the current socio-economic position of gulf countries he cited triggers of potential unrest as the high % of youth unemployment, rises in food prices, economic degradation and poor investment in public services.

    The Minister explained that over the last 20 years, globalisation has become the dominant discourse of the international community and that whether we are French or Australian, whether we are in Europe or whether we are in Asia, the challenges of global governance are now more acute than ever before in human history.

    Over 90 ABIE members enjoyed this year's Christmas drinks generously hosted by the Australian Ambassador in his embassy residence. It was also the occasion to say a sad farewell to the Ambassdor who has completed nearly 4 years tenure in France and returns to Australia mid December. ABIE President, Francois-Xavier Perin expressed heartfelt thanks for the immense support David Ritchie has given to ABIE as Honorary President.
