CHEP is the leading provider of pallet, container and crate pooling services for many of the world's largest supply chains and has had a strategic presence in France for 32 years with over 300 employees and 1200 customers.
The business evolved from the Allied Materials Handling Standing Committee (AMHSC), an organisation developed by the Australian government to provide efficient handling of defence supplies during World War II. When the war ended billions of blue pallets were left behind at American military bases in Australia. Stéphane Romatet spoke of the increasing French presence in Australia which he said was due firstly to young people taking advantage of the working holiday visa and secondly to investment from French companies. Some of his most frequent visitors to the French Embassy in Canberra are CEO's of French enterprises seeking opportunities in Australia. The numbers of Australian companies coming to France are in contrast much lower although figures may be misleading as many base themselves in the UK and are counted as British. Ambassador Romatet stressed the need to continue to overcome misconceptions about France as a destination for Australian investment and to encourage good relations between the two countries. He said that ABIE was taking an active part in this. Australia Day in Paris25/01/2013 It may have been a cold night on the river Seine, but ABIE members and friends celebrated Australia Day in a warm and friendly atmosphere on the Peniche Henjo. Following an introduction by the Australian Ambassador HE Ric Wells, CBA Chief Economist, Michael Blythe offered positive view of the Australian economy which continues to outperform other advanced economies with growth running comfortable above trend (3¼% per annum). He said that Australia has ranked in the top-3 economies in terms of resilience to economic shocks since the onset of the financial crisis and trend-type growth is a popular forecast for the next couple of years.
Some critical assumptions underlie these forecasts: Such as that on a global level China keeps going, commodities prices dont collapse, Europe muddles through and the US avoids the fiscal cliff. Whilst on a domestic level, that the mining construction boom runs its full course, fiscal consolidation is not too contractionary, and households are not too conservative.
The resources boom is a four-part story from an Australian perspective: the structural China emergence; the usual economic cycle around that structural story; the income effect from higher commodity prices; and the mining capex boom triggered by higher commodity prices. Over the past decade all four parts pushed in the same direction, with a very positive impact on the Australian economy as a result. The various parts are now moving in different directions.

"Australia has taken many positive steps since the last in-depth review in 2006 " IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven said at the launch of the report, 'Energy Policy of IEA Countries: Australia 2012'. "The IEA strongly supports Australia's continuing efforts to increase and improve low-carbon energy in the country".
Best known as a producer of coal and natural gas, Australia is the world's ninth‐largest energy producer and, with Canada and Norway, one of only three net energy exporters in the OECD. Notably, Australia is a significant investor in low-carbon technologies and, with its extensive wind, solar and geothermal resources as well as large biomass and ocean energy potential, has begun transitioning to a clean-energy economy.

Thanks to a dominant scrum, disciplined defense and clinical attacking moves, the French scored three tries to none for the Australians, finishing the match with a 33-6 scoreline. "Les Roncontes serve to promote and enhance Australia's reputation for talent, quality, and, if I may say, Government support. http://www.futur-en-seine.fr/en/ Frederic Calinaud tackles the question: French Employment law - What are you so afraid of? 26/10/2012 At ABIEs breakfast meeting of 26th October, Frederic Calinaud, Calinaud Avocats, spoke of the complex and often frightening issue of French employment law. As a specialist in French labour and employment law, Frederic assists both French and foreign companies with their employment issues. In his presentation he tackled some of the realities of French employment law; the complex and varied nature; the lack of flexibility; the premise of equal work = equal pay and the perception that the law is always in favour of the employee.
Frederic explained that French employment law changes all the time and is inevitably linked to politics and economics. The current high unemployment rate may encourage the government to be more flexible with employers in order to get results. He said he is seeing some increased flexibility in judges as a result of the economic crisis and need to create jobs.
As a conclusion, Frederic said that there are opportunities in France and his recommendation would be for companies to focus on their business whilst investing in specialist advice which might well save them money in the long run.
